AP® Statistics Unit 9: Inference for Slopes

Mar 14, 2023 | AP Statistics

WE MADE IT!! It is time for the final unit in AP Statistics: Inference for Quantitative Data: Slopes. The AP test is looming, AP review is right around the corner, and we are now teaching our students the last of the new content. Keep reading to hear about how I teach this unit to my students, and at the end, I have a FREE pacing guide for you!

Okay, I have a confession. In my first few years of teaching AP Statistics, I never taught any of the material in Unit 9. For shame, I know! Those were the years before the redesigned AP Stat CED, when the majority of AP Statistics exam did not have anything pertaining to slope inference. It wasn’t until about a year before the redesigned curriculum that I got serious about including this unit in my regular lessons.

Even now, it might be tempting to cut off this information; it is a short unit, the CED says it is only 2 – 5% of the exam, and reviewing for the AP exam sounds so nice right about this time of year. Through teaching this unit, I discovered that it is an amazing review of Unit 2, as well as all things confidence intervals and significance tests. Combining topics from the beginning of the year (least squares regression lines, residual plots, linear regression output, correlation, and more!) as well as confidence intervals and significance tests, really help the students begin their exam review while reviewing the last unit of study.

I currently cover this unit in 6 school days (50-minute class periods):

Day 1 – Notes 1 – Sampling Distributions and Confidence Intervals for Slopes

Day 2 – Finish Notes 1 and start HW 1 in class

Day 3 – Notes 2 – Hypothesis Testing for Slopes and start HW 2 in class

Day 4 – M&M Activity

Day 5 – Unit 9 Class Summary

Day 6 – Unit 9 Test

It is a short unit, so I don’t usually do a quiz for this unit, but I do have one available in my assessment package! I don’t have a Unit 9 project for students, just because I give the final project right after the Unit 9 test, and I don’t want them to worry about doing two projects at once.

It is so tempting to jump right into AP Exam review, but believe me when I say that a few days on this material will really help students review Unit 2 and inference! My students were so much better off for it and I wish I would have included it in my earlier years.

Happy Inferencing!
